Advisor Credentials

Credentials refer to educational background, work experience and formal certifications. As noted above, there is a wide variety of certifications available to financial market participants. The key is to focus on those credentials that appear most relevant for your needs. For example, if you need advice on life insurance products, be sure that your advisor has formal credentials in that industry (for example, CLU®). If you are seeking accounting advice, an individual or company with accounting experience and certifications is most sensible (for example, CPA). Similarly, if you are seeking broad assistance across a variety of financial needs, you want an individual advisor or company with relevant experience and certifications (for example, a CFA® or CFP®).
